Mr. Jack-O-Lantern and the Way He Grew Brighter

Poor old scary Mr. Jack-O-Lantern, he seems to have a bat where his mouth should be. Every year he sits alone in the dark looking scary. No matter how hard he tries he never gets to have any real fun. Spooky as he looked he really was very friendly. Look closely as his eyes sway with the breeze and you can see something warm, gentle and patient about his soul. The only reason his mouth is so unpleasant looking is that, one most unpleasant Halloween evening, a great big bat crashed into his original mouth, which was quite a jolly and friendly looking mouth, and left an outline of itself.

On Halloween, a little boy came by. The little boy started talking to Mr. Jack-O-Lantern, because on Pongo Island, people did as they please, and if he would like to talk to the Mr. Jack-O-Lantern that is exactly what he could do. He asked the Jack-O-Lantern if he was having a good day being that the night would be Halloween and he would get to glow and be seen. Mr. Jack-O-Lantern, delighted to be spoken to, answered the boy, "No. No, I am not so glad to do nothing but sit by myself and glow, but if you would stay with me I would be glad."

The little boy's name was Peter, Peter of Pongo Island, and he was very fond of Jack-O-Lanterns and of Halloween. He would be more than happy to stay with Mr. Jack-O-Lantern, he thought to himself. Then he said, "I can stay with you and we will have a party, with all of our Pongo Island friends, especially Ghost and Black Cat, because I Know Black Cat and Ghost are really nice and we will all drink Pongo Punch and eat Pongo Pretzels while we wait for the Flying Witch to pass over."

So it was settled, Peter of Pongo Island, Mr. Jack-O-Lantern, Black Cat and Ghost would gather together by nightfall and wait merrily for the Flying Witch, playing games such as Pongo Checkers, Pongo Hop Scotch (this is where Mr. Jack-O-Lantern casts the stone since he cannot hop) and making merry until the witch flies over. No one was really sure of Flying Witch so it was agreed they would watch, but avoid her.

The entire party lasted all afternoon, lasted all evening, lasted until the witch flew passed the moon, and lasted even until the moon disappeared into the sunrise. Everyone played Pongo Hop Scotch, Pongo Checkers, drank Pongo Punch and told stories of their favorite friends before this night. They also even sang and marched in cadence as they partied through the night. Mr. Jack-O-Lantern had never been so happy, and from that year on he glowed more brilliantly every Halloween.
